The company

Albion Coldchain is a British cold chain and HVAC contractor in Dubai, built on the engineering of the UKC Group.

About the company

Design, installation, maintenance and repair of cold rooms, refrigeration and HVAC, from one contractor, to one specification.

Temperature ranges

Held at temperature, all year round.

From chilled produce to blast freezing, every room is held against a Dubai August that sits fifty degrees above it.

  • Chilled+2°+1 to +4 °C for produce and dairy, +2 to +8 °C for pharmaceuticals.
  • Frozen−22°−18 to −25 °C on insulated, heated floors.
  • Blast−40°Pull-down to product core temperature. Blast freezers

How we work

Build it, fix it, keep it running.

Why Albion

Build it right the first time.

Design life

20 years

A cold room is a twenty-year asset, but under-specified rooms in Gulf heat often need major work long before that. Ours are specified, installed and documented for twenty years.

Gulf rated

+50 °C

Every system is selected and de-rated for Gulf summer ambient, the condition that quietly kills under-specified plant.

Insights

Why cold rooms fail in the Gulf.

Five failures we see again and again on UAE surveys, and how each one is designed out on a new build, or put right on an existing room.

01Refrigeration

Plant sized for a European summer.

Condensing units are often picked from catalogue ratings taken at around 32 °C ambient. On a Dubai roof in August the air entering the condenser can be well over 45 °C. Capacity falls, head pressure climbs, and the room that held temperature in the morning drifts every afternoon.

What you’ll see

  • Room temperature creeping up through the afternoon
  • Compressors running non-stop, or tripping on high pressure
  • Short compressor life and repeat call-outs

How we build it, or put it right

  • Plant selected and de-rated for +50 °C ambient
  • Condensers sited for clear airflow and shade, away from hot-air recirculation
  • Coils and controls checked for high-ambient duty at commissioning

02Floors

Frozen ground under the freezer.

A freezer slab without proper insulation and underfloor heating slowly freezes the ground beneath it. Moisture in the sub-base turns to ice, expands and lifts the floor. The damage builds for years before anyone sees it.

What you’ll see

  • Cracked or humped floor slab
  • Doors that start to bind or drag
  • Racking out of level

How we build it, or put it right

  • Insulated floor build-up on every frozen and blast room
  • Anti-condensation heater mat or ventilated sub-floor, monitored
  • Existing floors surveyed for heave before any refit

03Doors

Doors, seals and heater wires.

The door opens hundreds of times a day, and every opening lets in hot, humid air. On frozen rooms, failed frame heaters let seals freeze to the frame and ice build around the opening, until the door is left propped open.

What you’ll see

  • Ice on frames and thresholds
  • Torn or flattened seals
  • Evaporators icing up between defrosts

How we build it, or put it right

  • Heated frames and pressure relief on frozen rooms
  • High-speed doors or strip curtains where traffic is heavy
  • Seals and heaters checked on every maintenance visit

04Envelope

Leaking panel joints.

Warm, humid coastal air pushes moisture towards the cold side of the wall. Unsealed joints and service penetrations let it in, where it condenses and freezes inside the panel, eating into the insulation and the hygiene of the room.

What you’ll see

  • Frost lines or ice along joints and ceilings
  • Damp, staining or mould around penetrations
  • Energy use rising year on year

How we build it, or put it right

  • Engineered panel joints, sealed on the warm side
  • Every pipe and cable penetration sealed and finished
  • Thermal survey of existing rooms to find the leaks

05Monitoring

Nobody watching.

Most failures start small: a fan motor, a drifting thermostat, a door left ajar overnight. Without monitoring, the first alarm is spoiled stock at the start of a shift.

What you’ll see

  • Losses discovered in the morning
  • No temperature records for audits
  • The same fault called out again and again

How we build it, or put it right

  • Remote monitoring with web access and phone alarms
  • Temperature logging for food-safety and pharma audits
  • Planned maintenance that acts on the data

Approach

Survey to sign-off.

  1. Large empty cold room before fit-out
    Step 01

    Free survey & heat load

An engineer visits, measures, and calculates the load from your rooms, product, door openings and Gulf ambient. You get drawings, a specification and a budget figure, free of charge. How we size a room

  2. Cold room under construction
    Step 02

    Build

Our own engineers install panels, floors, doors and plant to the same drawings and specification we would use in the UK.

  3. Finished cold room with yellow sliding door
    Step 03

    Commission & maintain

Pulled down, commissioned and logged. You keep the drawings, load calculations and commissioning records. Then a planned maintenance contract for the life of the store, with parts and breakdown response within the hours agreed in your SLA.

About

Meet Albion.

Albion is the oldest recorded name for Britain, and the standard we brought with us. Our engineers work between the UK and the Gulf, so every project here is built to the same specification as at home.

Albion Coldchain is the trading name of Scandia HVAC LLC in the UAE, and part of the UKC Group. Our UK group company, UK Coldstore Limited, has manufactured and installed cold rooms, insulated panels and temperature-controlled facilities in Britain since 1999, for food production, retail, logistics and pharmaceutical customers. Albion has worked in Dubai since 2024 to the same specifications, commissioning documents and engineering sign-off, and the engineers who build a room are the ones who maintain it.
